How owning your experiences can help you develop a fresh, positive outlook on life.

Own your experiences for a more complete, mindful life.

From our own birth to making our morning cup of coffee our lives are made up of thousands, if not millions, of unique experiences. These experiences combined dictate how we see the world and how we react to it.

No one else on the planet has lived the exact same combination of experiences as you. That is why no one on the planet can see and approach life in exactly the same way as you can.

Your experiences make you perfectly unique.

It is clear then that what you experience has a huge impact on who you are and how you feel. When you experience love, it is easier to love others. When you accomplish a great run time, you carry that sense of achievement everywhere you go.

So, it stands to reason that if you are proactive about finding and bringing positive experiences into your life then you can own those experiences and own how you feel. Booking that running event you have been thinking about can be a great achievement in itself and help carry you forward to achieve personal greatness.

Own your experiences and realise your strength.

Owning your experiences isn’t about being the best, it’s about being the best version of yourself.

A person training for their first 5K can take just as much powerful ownership of their experience as a seasoned runner trying to beat their personal best marathon time. It’s all about testing your grit, pushing your own limits and discovering just what you are capable of achieving.

Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius once noted:

“You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”

This is true to an extent.

You can attract positive things by being proactive and by seeking out experiences that you know will challenge you such as booking a running event that pushes your limits. But you can’t control every experience you have. Things may get difficult, you may pick up an injury or personal circumstances may hinder your training. This quote shows well that whatever life throws at you or however scary your goals might be, if you take ownership of your experiences you can conquer the greatest challenges.

Own your experience – 5 tips for getting started.

Below are 5 tips to get you started on proactively owning your experiences.

  1. Be proactive – seek out experiences that you believe will improve your outlook on life
  2. Be mindful – positive experiences are only beneficial if you are fully present
  3. Reflect – after an experience, reflect on how it went and how it made you feel, ask yourself:
    • What did you learn?
    • What did you like about it?
    • What did you not like about it?
    • How would you do it differently if you did it again?
  4. Don’t be disheartened – if the experience was bad or didn’t live up to expectations, don’t be put off, learn from it and move on
  5. Repeat or delete – if you found the experience positive, plan to repeat it if you can. If it was negative, consider whether there is anything you could change about it – if not then delete it from your life
