Discover how owning your moment can help you achieve more and learn more in life.

Own your moment, you’ve earned it.

What is the greatest moment in your life so far?

Perhaps it was landing your dream job, smashing a running personal best, completing an event you had been training for, the moment you got married or the first time you held your firstborn.

Now, remember how it made you feel?

Whether it is a huge achievement that alters the course of your life or a little win that brightens up your day, these great moments add some sparkle to our lives and motivate us to keep going.

Often we don’t take enough time to recognise these moments and why they have come to be. These moments have been earned through hard work, grit and determination and deserve to be embraced and fully appreciated.

It isn’t just moments of greatness that are important. How we deal with difficult moments can also have a huge impact on our lives.

Some of the greatest sportspeople alive have faced hard times. The road to greatness is paved with challenges, disappointments and wrong moves. It is how we deal with these moments that determine whether we achieve our goals or fall short. Remember that you have never failed at anything until you give up.

Own your moment and learn from it.

Owning your moment is all about appreciating the effort you have put in.

Take the time to be present and embrace it. This will help motivate you to take the next step in your journey. For example, for a beginner runner, celebrating the moment you add a mile or shave 10 seconds off your run will help propel you and motivate you towards achieving your next goal.

Equally, you can learn and motivate yourself from the moments where things just don’t go your way. How you act in these moments define your success. For example, when you suffer from a painful blister, will you let that stop your progress or focus on another area of training until it has time to heal up?

Only you can own your moment and make the most of it.

Own your moment.

It can be easy to let the moment pass without enjoying it, embracing it and learning from it. Here are some ways to help you make the most of life’s special moments:

  1. Stop – Sometimes we just need to stop and take a minute to enjoy moments. This is especially true for good moments when we become excited about the next challenge.
  2. Set goals – How do you know you have achieved something if you aren’t clear on what it is you wanted to achieve? Note down your goals on paper and include a factor that you can measure. For example, ‘go running’ is harder to tick off a list than ‘run 5 miles’
  3. Celebrate with others – When you encounter great moments, celebrate them with others, especially if they helped you achieve them.
  4. Note down lessons – If you are constantly looking for ways to learn from experiences you have to be mindful of what you are doing. Note down lessons you have learnt from every experience you encounter.
